Web 2.0 Essentials, Part 2: How to get started
Monday, September 18th, 2006 | web
In the first part of this Web 2.0 essentials series, I explained what Web 2.0 is. In this post I will present its most prominent proponents and a handy guide on how to start your Web 2.0 career.
The Stars
These are the Web 2.0 tools and sites that you should be familiar with and – at least once – have tried out.
- WikiPedia: An encyclopedia which everyone can edit. Despite the controversy around the lack of sources and occasionally vandalized article, this is my personal top Web 2.0 application.
- del.icio.us: A social bookmarking service – really great to have your bookmarks with you anywhere, anytime.
- Flickr: An easy to use photo hosting, sharing, and tagging service.
- GMail: The best webmail service there ever was.
- YouTube: The most important video sharing and tagging site – you can spend hours there…
- Digg: A news website where users submit an rank (”digg”) the stories.
- Technorati: A search engine for blogs.
- Listible: A service to create and share annoted lists of anything you like.
- MySpace: A social networking service which includes many upcoming bands
The Essential Toolkit
To become a real Web 2.0 user, you’ll need to follow these steps:
- Start a blog with one of the many blog hosting services out there (e.g. blogger, typepad, livejournal)
- Get a newsfeed aggregator to collect and read newsfeeds online (e.g. newsgator, bloglines, netvibes)
- Get a del.icio.us account and start your bookmark collection
- Get a flickr account and upload your photos
- Sign up for a social networking service (myspace, OpenBC, LinkedIn)
- Get a bittorrent client to download files (e.g. azureus, utorrent)
If there’s anything I missed, please let me know!

If you have a pet get an account at Catster or Dogster and open a profile for your pet. Catster allows not only uploads of images, but also movie clips, so that you can share your pet’s funnies with other cat or dog lovers around the world. You can also join groups based on cat breed or region. That is useful if you want to know more about health problems of specific breeds etc. If people ask me how my cats look I forward them their Catster profiles. http://www.catster.com
