At the Turn of the Tide

Hail thee, raiders of Rohan. Bubbles and I decided to kick off our winter season by watching LOTR – again. I must admit, it sets the tone quite well, especially after such a non-summer as we had. In order not to go to bed too late, we are watching the (extended versions of the) movies in 6 instead of 3 parts.
What amazes me about LOTR is how well Peter Jackson and his crew emulate the depth of Tolkien’s material; it’s more than just a movie about a book based on a thoroughly designed culture and history: The crew recreated this whole culture and history – visual designs, props, the pronounciation of languages – and based a movie upon it. In other words: It’s not an adaption. It’s a recreation.

Dear LordYo,

LOTR rules big time. For me LOTR is the winter feelgood (doesn’t it feel good to massacre some Ork?) movie, best to be enjoyed with a warm fire in the fireplace, some chocolate chunk cookies, hot tea and thick socks.

I just wonder what Orks, Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits would work at nowadays. I can imagine Elves well as etheral Yoga instructors or even in the more visionary management echelons (Legolas: The dawn is red, we should invest more in biotechnology), whereas the dwarves would be great roadies on tour. As they’re used to working without daylight, they’d also be good as consultants, not minding being locked up in some cellar without daylight…

Given the consumer orientation of the consumer goods industry in Germany and Switzerland, I guess the Orks have all found a safe place in customer service or as shop clerks… :-) )
